About Sphere, Launch of the 2018 Handbook
The Sphere Handbook is the most widely known and internationally recognised set of common principles and universal minimum standards in humanitarian response. In November 2018, Sphere released a new edition of the handbook.
Regional and Country Context
Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi have recently been hard hit by Cyclone Idai, which left hundreds of people dead, thousands of people homeless and livelihoods destroyed. Communities had varying degrees of preparedness and those better prepared had less casualties. There are many lessons to be learnt from the response to this cyclone that can help governments, communities, NGOs and inter-governmental agencies, churches and the corporate sector to be better prepared and more effective and efficient in responding to humanitarian emergencies.
Sphere Handbook Launch (28 May 2019) and 3-day Sphere Training Event (29-31 May 2019)
Our goal is to contribute to improved quality and accountability in humanitarian response among communities, churches, NGOs, Inter-governmental agencies, FBOs, corporates, and key government agencies in the region and in Zimbabwe and strengthen communities’ capacities to recover.
