The course aims to prepare individuals to promote learning on applying the Sphere Handbook through sharing experiences and practicing.

Target audience

The training will target humanitarian professionals and practitioners of Canadian Development and Humanitarian organizations and/or students in Development and/or Humanitarian affairs.

Course aim and objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

TEACH AND TRAIN THEIR PEERS

Understand and learn about basic adult learning principles
Learn how to design a learning event, defining key contents and setting objectives
Learn training methods and techniques
Teach their peers on the four Sphere thematics: WASH, Shelter; Settlement and NFI; Food security & Nutrition; Health
HISTORY AND FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

Understand the history, founding principles and evolution of the Sphere Project
Review the concepts of a “Rights based approach” and how Sphere – and others – contributed to their development
Discuss why Sphere is important to Canada
INSTRUMENTS SUPPORTING SPHERE

Understand the Humanitarian Charter
Recall the Code of Conduct principles in their practise
Explain how the Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS) try to summarize all previous humanitarian norms and standards
Understand how Sphere Protection Principles support the Sphere approach
SPHERE HANDBOOK STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES

Understand how the Sphere standards apply throughout the programme cycle
Explain how vulnerabilities and capacities require special attention
Assess how the operational setting affects the implementation of standards
Review Standards, Key actions, Key indicators and Guidance notes in: WASH, Food security and Nutrition, Shelter and Settlement, & Health
Feel at ease to develop humanitarian programming that rely on Sphere principles and standards
Pre-requisites for participants

Good understanding of current humanitarian issues as field or HQ practitioners
Acquisition of the Sphere Handbook 2018 edition
Pre reading of the Humanitarian Charter, Code of Conduct and Core Humanitarian Standards
Training contents

Review of the History, founding principles and raison d’être of Sphere
Understand the importance of a Rights based approach
Revise the key instruments which are the Humanitarian Charter, the Code of Conduct, the Protection principles
Understand how Sphere supports a Humanitarian Project Cycle
Review how the Sphere Handbook presents Key Standards, Action and Guidance Notes
Learn how to train and teach adults, facilitate trainings sessions, design learning content
Organize group presentations for their peers on specific Sphere thematic chapters
