By Ms. Daria Pistriak, Coordinator for Ukraine and Eastern Europe, Sphere Sphere’s Programme for Ukraine and Eastern Europe started earlier in 2022 in response to the conflict in Ukraine. Four translation agencies have now been selected to translate the Sphere Handbook into the target languages: Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian and Slovak. The translators will be assisted by humanitarian sector professionals who are native speakers of the target languages. These “linguistic leads” work closely with translators and proofreaders to assure translation quality.

Sphere calls on Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian and Slovak speakers with humanitarian sector experience to volunteer their time to join the Translation Working Groups (TWGs). TWG members support their linguistic lead by advising on terminology and language to ensure the translated version is understandable and acceptable for the national humanitarian community. Translation of the foundation chapters and a handful of technical standards will be completed by mid-November, after which Sphere will organise pilot training events in Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Moldova. Sphere welcomes partnerships with local partners to:
  • Host pilot training workshops, launches or other events (in-person or online);
  • Disseminate new translations (from 2023);
  • Join the Sphere community as a Member, Focal point, Trainer or Champion to sustain the Sphere network and support practitioners at national or subnational level.
